Photobook Tourney Round Two

Blake’s posted the results of Photobook Tourney Round One. Mostly went the way I thought, but there are a few unbelievable outcomes, the most egregious in my view are:

  • Surprising: Helen Levitt defeating Walker Evans’ Many Are Called.
  • Un-bel-liev-able: Weegee’s Naked City defeated Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency. This is a huge disruption to my predicitons. Now I see Weegee making it to the fourth round!
  • Not terribly surprised, but wrong nonetheless, Lee Friedlander’s self portrait defeated Andy Warhol’s Index. I think Friedlander’s reputation within photo circles combined with some general disdain for Warhol in photography.
  • Apparently some Weston die-hards pushed him over the top against Ed Ruscha. Ridiculous.
  • I predicted the Europe division nearly perfect save not seeing the Bechers being knocked out in the first round. I’d seen them going all the way to round four!

For Round Two voting (through 3/29), here are my predictions:

  • Diane Arbus (self titled) over DeCarava and Hughes, The Sweet Flypaper of Life
  • Bruce Davidson, East 100th St. over Helen Levitt, A Way of Seeing
  • Garry Winogrand, The Animals over Lee Friedlander, Self Portrait
  • Weegee, Naked City over W. Klein, Life is Good & Good for You in New York
  • Walker Evans, American Photographs over Harry Callahan Photographs
  • Robert Adams, The New West over Larry Clark, Tulsa
  • William Eggleston’s Guide over Joel Sternfeld, American Prospects
  • L. Baltz, The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, CA over Edward Weston, Fifty Photographs
  • H. Cartier-Bresson, The Decisive Moment over Robert Capa, Slightly Out of Focus
  • August Sander, Face of Our Time over Brassai, Paris By Night
  • Eugene Atget, Photographs of Paris over Josef Sudek, Fotografie
  • Bill Brandt, The English at Home over May Ray Photographs 1920-24
  • Robert Frank, The Americans over Jim Goldberg, Rich and Poor
  • D. Moriyama, Bye Bye Photography over Danny Lyon, The Bikeriders
  • R. E. Meatyard, The Family Album of Lucybelle Crater over Kikuji Kawada, The Map
  • Sultan and Mandel, Evidence over Susan Meiselas, Carnival Strippers

My final predictions were not disrupted by the round one results. I still predict William Eggleston versus August Sander in the final with the inevitable William Eggleston taking the final trophy.

This thing is a bunch of fun and thanks to Blake for putting it together!
